In case of insufficient enrollment, The Print Studio reserves the right to cancel a course or workshop two business days prior to the start date. If you must withdraw form a course or workshop, The Print Studio must be notified three days prior to the start date in order to receive a refund, a $25 administrative fee applies.

PRINTMAKING USING A PRESS
Litho/Etching

Tuesdays - 6 Weeks

Instructor: Robert Creighton

You asked for it, so we’re giving it to you! A fairly open Litho/Etching Course taught by the master, Robert Creighton. He will go through techniques in both Etching and Lithography as well as other areas as decided upon by the participants/instructor.

POSTER MAKING USING RELIEF PRINT METHODS
Relief Printmaking

Tuesday nights - 4 Weeks
March 6 to March 27
6:30 pm to 9:30 pm

Instructor: Becky Katz

Create a cool looking poster! (or other relief printed artwork). Exploring the oldest form of printmaking, this course will teach students the many wonders of relief printing. Students will learn to use the different cutting tools, as well as various techniques, and how to operate the press for printing.

LEARN TO USE YOUR DIGITAL CAMERA AND MORE

Thursday nights

Learn how to use your digital camera already! This workshop will cover the basics of photography and the art of composing. Through demos and hands-on practice you will develop relevant computer skills for handling digital photos. Students should bring their camera and manual to every session.

PRINT YOUR OWN TEE!
Screenprinting

Saturday - 1 day

Instructor: Matt McInnes, Chris Saba

Bring in your own natural fiber t-shirt (or any piece of clothing) and learn to screen print. Create personalized designs and unique gifts. All you need is your own artwork or selected image in black and white format. Maximum 2 colors per design.

MAKE YOUR OWN SILVER PENDANT
Using a Print Technique!

Instructor: Juan Bohorquez from Cynosure Jewellery Kitchener

Create a customized silver pendant! Participants will create a design and transfer the design to Lino block. Instead of printing on paper, participants will use PMC, an amazing clay-like material that when fired turns into pure silver before your eyes!

Japanese Paper Afternoon
at The Print Studio

Etching, Woodblock, Litho, Lino, Monoprint, Chine-colle, Drypoint, Stencil, Digital...

Whatever printmaking technique you favour, Japanese paper (washi) can enliven your end result!

The Japanese Paper Place will host this presentation and complete it with the chance to purchase papers appropriate to the kind of printmaking you do. 10% of the sales will go to The Print Studio to encourage the growth of this very special resource in Hamilton.

Through images of the papermaking process, examples of prints from our collection, and from first-hand accounts by printmakers who use Japanese paper, you’ll be inspired to take advantage of the wide variety of natural and coloured washi currently available. A sampling of papers will be provided for each attendee.

The Print Studio Shop will be putting out a call for submissions for April’s Exhibition - of prints done on Japanese Paper with a voter’s choice best use of the paper to win a JPP prize pack!
So come get some paper and create some great works!!!

POSTER DESIGN AND SCREENPRINTING
Photoshop Basics, Screenprinting

Create, translate images and screenprint a great poster (or other print). Matt will take you through creating a great poster design and translating an image in Photoshop to be screeprint suitable, as well as taking you through the screenprinting process and printing.

INTRO TO PHOTOSHOP
Editing Photos and Images Digitally - Print your Image digitally after using our Large Format Printer!

Saturday - 1 day

This workshop provides an introduction to using the leading industry software for working with photographs and digital images, Adobe Photoshop. Students will learn tools, working in layers, and techniques that can be used for editing images.

TRANSFER MONOTYPES
Photocopy Transfer

Instructor: Claudette Losier

Participants will learn how to transfer photocopies (of photos, drawings, letters) onto other surfaces (canvas, paper, board, tiles, boxes, etc!) to be able to create unique pieces of art that can be enhanced through the addition of many other methods.

WATERCOLOUR PRINTS
Watercolour Monotypes

Fun and immediate, monotypes are often referred to as ‘painterly prints’. Learn to produce vibrant one-of-a-kind prints. The beauty of this medium is in its spontaneity and its combination of printmaking, painting, drawing, and stenciling.

DIGITAL ART COLLAGE
Adobe Photoshop

Learn to create art collages with a variety of images and scanned materials. Emphasis is on using and manipulating layers. Great for creating digital art and illustrations for cards, DVD covers, posters, advertising and artwork. It is easier than it appears.

Digital Studio

The Print Studio offers a wide range of workshops that explore digital software and printing.If you are interested in a workshop that is not currently listed or offered, please email digital@theprintstudio.ca.

With enough interest, The Print Studio will happily design a workshop that suits your needs. All workshops are open to both members and non-members; however, members pay reduced rates and depending on the workshop will receive free computer time in the Digital Studio.

DIGITAL LAB WORKSHOP REGISTRATION POLICY

Participants who cancel up to 3 business days prior to workshop date will receive a FULL REFUND. NO REFUNDS will be given for CANCELLATIONS made with less than 3 business days notice.

Workshop Dates & Times occasionally change. Participants will be notified of any schedule changes or cancellations by telephone or email.

Print Studio Members, who have taken any workshop that includes free computer time, must book and use their time in the Digital Lab within one month following the completion of the course. After this time the hours will become forfeit.

Free Artist Professional Development workshops during the month of March 2011 at The Print Studio:

Artwork Documentation
With Aaron Campbell


Members can bring in a maximum of 4 pieces of unframed works on paper to be professionally documented. (**Please contact us at programming@theprintstudio.ca if you have questions about the work you wish to have photographed. Work must be delivered to The Print Studio by 5 pm on Friday March 4, 2010. This opportunity will be available to 16 participants.

Introduction to Grant Writing
With Ingrid Mayrhofer


Saturday March 12, 2011. 10am – 4 pm

In this workshop arts administrator Ingrid Mayrhofer will introduce participants to the process of applying for federal and provincial grants from the Canada Council for the Arts and the Ontario Arts Council. Participants should bring the following to the workshop: a CV, artist statement/project idea, images of their work, and should have a sense of what type of grant theywould want to apply for. This workshop will run from 10 -12 with a one-hour break for lunch and then resume from 1:00 – 4:00pm. ***This workshop will be closed to 10 participants.

Marketing Your Work
With Lynda Henriksen


Saturday March 19, 2011. 12:00 – 1:30 pm

Consultant Lynda Henriksen will provide lead participants through the process of development of a business and marketing plan for individual artists. She will begin by asking:

• What, precisely is the market?
• Is the market growing, shrinking, or staying the same?
• Is the market big enough to make it worth the time?
Lynda will lead participants through the steps of pricing sales and promotion as well as developing creative outlets for pricing and sales.

Introduction to Public Art Competitions
With Ciara McKeown


Saturday March 26, 2011. 12:00 – 1:30 pm

In this session City of Hamilton Art in Public Places Coordinator Ciara McKeown will provide an introduction to public art competitions. Providing examples of regional and international public art projects, Ciara will navigate the field of public art, defining the genre, bridging the gap between traditional art practice and public art and will demystify the public art competition process.

This session is presented jointly by the City of Hamilton and The Print Studio.

INSTRUCTOR BIOS


Victoria Alstein

Victoria Alstein is a Hamilton based artist who graduated from the studio arts program at McMaster University. Her work has been displayed throughout Hamilton, Toronto, and more recently, out of province. She focuses on mixed media work combining contemporary printmaking techniques with drawing and painting.

Wesley Bates
Wesley Bates is a freelance illustrator and wood engraver who lives and works in Clifford Ontario. Bates has illustrated W.O. Mitchell’s The Black Bonspiel of Willie MacCrimmon, Stuart Mclean’s Vinyl Café Stories, Timothy Findley’s From Stone Orchard, and in 1994 The Point of the Graver, a collection of Bates’ work with biographical notes, published by Porcupine’s Quill. Wesley is a member of the Wood Engraver’s Network, The Loving Society of Letter press Printers, The Canadian Bookbinders and Book Artists Guild and the Ontario Society of Artists.



Juan Bohorquez and Shannon Kennedy from Cynosure Jewellery Kitchener
Cynosure’s designers, have a shared innovative vision and creative concepts.
The artists want to bring their art expression closer to the people, to their environment, and make them, the people, interact more directly with the artwork, in the visual attachment and the actual physical awareness. These aspects are achieved by implementing such factors as weight, movement, and hidden aspects. Precious metals, stones and even unconventional materials bring their balance of beauty and strength to complement the artist’s vision. They each strive to expand the realm of what is normally considered jewelry. This is represented by the evolution of their current work, which is defined by the necessity of exploring new art techniques and forms of art expression.


Mark Byk
Mark Byk is a visual artist, printmaker and graphic designer. He has exhibited work throughout North America, including Santa Monica, New York and Toronto. His work has also been internationally recognized and published in art books, newspapers, magazines and websites.

Robert Creighton

Robert Creighton lives in his studio in Lynden, Ontario. He is a master printer trained in Canada and the United Kingdom. He graduated from Humber College in 1971 with a Diploma in Graphic Arts, McMaster University in 1977 with an Honours Bachelor of Arts Degree in Art and Art History, The Edinburgh College of Art with a Post-Graduate Diploma from the School of Painting and Drawing and the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Education Degree. He exhibits internationally and is included in public and private collections in Canada, Europe, the United Kingdom, the United States and Australia.


Delio Delgado
Delio Delgado is a visual artist living in Hamilton,Ontario. He holds a Diploma in interdisciplinary studies from Altos de Chavon the School of Design, and a BFA in painting from The National School of Fine Arts of the Dominican Republic.

Eric Euler
Eric Euler is a print/painting based artist who currently lives in downtown Toronto. He graduated from The Ontario College of Art & Design in May 2009 with a BFA in Printmaking. His artwork is a chaotic mosaic of apocalyptic transcendence. He currently works as a custom printer and teacher's assistant at the Ontario College of Art and Design.


Thea Faulds
Thea has a B.F.A. in New Media from Ryerson University. She has worked with many different mediums, including video, audio and digital photo editing programs. Thea is currently working as a Digital Technician at The Print Studio where her focus has been to use imaging software to create high quality digital prints.


Elizabeth Forrest
After obtaining a liberal arts and an education degree in Toronto, Elizabeth studied printmaking at the Ontario College of Art and Design, graduating with honours. She later taught printmaking at OCAD for seven years. Recent exhibitions include Canadian Woodblock Prints, Montreal; The Washi Summit, Toronto, and WATER WOOD PAPER: Mokuhanga, at the Japan Foundation Toronto. Her work is represented in a number of private and public collections.


Donna Ibing
A Graduate of the Ontario College of Art in 1971, Donna has since become one of Ontario's leading artists in painting and printmaking. Her work has been shown in most major citys across Canada including Vancouver, Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto. Donna's trademark printmaking work is achieved primarily with her woodcut technique.


Alison Judd
Alison
is a visual artist currently living in Guelph, Ontario. She holds a Diploma in Interdisciplinary Studies, a BFA in Print Media, and a MFA in Print Media. Her installation and print works have been exhibited in many places around the world. She currently teaches printmaking at the University of Guelph and the Ontario College of Art and Design.


Becky Katz
Becky is a well-known Hamilton based artist who graduated from the studio arts program at McMaster University. Her work has been displayed throughout Hamilton, Toronto, and more recently, out of province. She focuses on woodcut relief and portraiture.

Paula Krochak
Paula is a Hamilton based printmaker and arts facilitator. She graduated from OCAD University in 2008 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a major in Printmaking. Her work has been shown between Hamilton and Toronto. She creates and facilitates art workshops at The Art Gallery of Hamilton, The Juravinski Cancer Centre, and The Print Studio. She was the recent recipient of the Hamilton Arts Award for Community Arts - Emerging Artist.


Claudette Losier
Claudette's creativity focuses on her paintings in oils using the glazing method of painting, and realism with various themes such as: flowers and gardens, swimmer as a metaphor for identity and life’s journey, portraiture, and using various transfer art techniques.

Ingrid Mayrhofer
Ingrid is a visual artist, curator and community arts practitioner. Her personal and collective projects have employed a wide range of media including printmaking, photography, mural painting, installation, sculpture, and video. During the past 20 years, she has served on numerous individual and organizational grant juries at arts councils, on foundation and municipal advisories, and worked as granting officer at the Ontario Arts Council. Mayrhofer is a member of the programming committee at TPS.

Matt McInnes

Matt is a Hamilton based printmaker. He is well known for his images of local buildings and landmarks. He graduated from The Ontario College of Art and Design in 2001, with a diploma in Fine Art, and a focus in printmaking. From 2002 – 2003, Matt worked out of the printmaking studio at the Dundas Valley School of Art. In 2005, he began working out of the Print Studio, and was the recipient of the 2007 Emerging Printmaker Scholarship awarded by The Print Studio. As the current Print Studio education coordinator, McInnes creates and facilitates print based workshops with primary and secondary school students in the Hamilton region.


Todd Murray
Todd is a Hamilton resident and has been involved with photography for over 30 years. He has been a past president of the Hamilton Camera Club and is one of the founding members of the Studio 12 Artistic Photographers Collective on James St. N. Todd has assisted The Print Studio with the Digital Lab project and is currently working on several large community related photographic projects. In the studio, Todd enjoys working with people from all walks of life. He tries to capture them in “natural moments of expression”, as this, he believes, portrays every person at their most attractive moment.

Brian Musson
Brian holds a B.A. (Fine Art) from the University of Guelph and a P.G.D.D.P. from Edinburgh College of Art. Musson, a practising artist, has shown extensively. He has worked as a Master Printer (New Leaf Editions, Vancouver), and was, prior to moving East, Head of Printmaking at Kwantlen University College, Surrey, B.C. He is currently an adjunct professor in the faculty of Architecture at the University of Waterloo.

Martin Renters
Martin is a Hamilton based artist and photographer. He plays an active role in the Hamilton Camera Club.
Martin was the lead technical consultant in the installation of the brand new, innovative digital studio at The Print Studio.http://www.teckelworks.com

Christopher Saba
Chris Graduated from Queen's University in 2008 with a BFA(H). He has exhibited work in both group and solo exhibitions all over Ontario. Chris is the Studio Technician at The Print Studio.
