ABOUT
We
are committed to:
The Artists
The Print Studio is committed to the establishment of a print media facility
that is environmentally responsible and meets the traditional to contemporary
needs of new, emerging and established artists. The Print Studio encourages
community participation and educational diversity.
In addition to the above, The Print Studio facilitates a community of
printmakers and creates a strong print media culture that can become recognized
regionally, nationally and internationally. This also enables this region
to be recognized for its diverse culture through visual expression.
The Community
The Print Studio reaches out to members of the community through classes,
partnerships, the gallery, open houses, special events and out-reach programming.
A catalogue listing of courses is produced each session and distributed
throughout the targeted areas. Partnerships with other organizations are
encouraged. The Print Studio and Gallery regularly opens their doors to
the public to engage them in print culture, and introduce them to local-,
national- and international-level printmakers. We also initiate collaboration
with other sectors be it environmental groups, human and social services,
sports and recreation, and use art to grow stronger as a community.
History
The Print Studio was conceived in 2003 as an idea to cater to the printmaking
needs of the South Eastern Ontario region. The founding thought was a
desire by Colina Maxwell and Katherine Zarull to provide accessible and
affordable printmaking facilities to all.
In 2004, a Board of Trustees was nominated to support the growth of this
idea and they were selected to directly benefit the professional, cultural
and economic requirements to make this idea a lasting legacy for the growth
of Canadian Printmaking and the communities in this region. A site was
located at 173 James Street North in the historic downtown area of Hamilton
and transformed to the magnificent studio and gallery space you can visit
today.
In November, The Ontario Trillium Foundation granted $75,000 towards an
environmentally responsible exhaust room to facilitate the safe handling
and storage of chemicals by the printmakers.
Following the charitable status designation in December 2004, Dofasco,
Turkstra Lumber, Matcom Industrial Installations and Threshold School
of building also aided the Studio in the major renovations of the first
floor, the acquisition and the installation of the initial printmaking
equipment. Renovations were completed in September 2005.
In 2005 The Print Studio is operating as a not-for-profit charitable arts
organization striving for excellence in the creation, production, preservation
and promotion of Fine Art Prints. It is committed to showcasing local,
national and international artists and equally committed to providing
community access using educational, innovative and out-reach programming
to engage the communities of the Hamilton-Wentworth region.
