The Print Studio engages the public with the printmaking community through integrated art, community and educational programming. (ACE)

Education
SSAS Programming – Schools in the Studio & Artists in the Schools

The Print Studio’s SSAS Educational Programming offers accessible, professional and curriculum based artistic programming to the education communities in the Hamilton region. SSAS programs bring schools into the Studio and professional artist into the schools to explore the hands-on creative process and make print media art.
Available to Grades 3 through 12.

SSAS – Hamilton Region
All SSAS programs contain cross curriculum content relating to professional printmaking practices and Ontario curriculum topics, including Social Studies, Science, Math, and Language Arts. Along with hands-on work elements, each workshop includes a brief discussion on the history of print and how artists use it today. Workshops can be held either in the class room or in the studio.


• Programs may be booked as morning or afternoon sessions.
• Programs are 2 hours in length and can accommodate one standard class size per program. (25 students max.)
• Programs are offered September through June.

The Print Studio is interested in access to art and providing art programming to all students in the Hamilton region by removing barriers and allowing children to participate. With the support from the Hamilton Community Foundation’s Tackling Poverty Together, Phase II and Turkstra Lumber, The Print Studio is proud to be able to offer programming at no charge to identified schools in our “Hub” where a large portion of the student body has socio- economic challenges.

SSAS - James North / Cannon Express
Project Dates: September 2008 – July 2009
Project Partner: Sir John A. MacDonald High School, Hamilton

Programming linking professional artists with secondary school students at Sir John A. MacDonald School in the Print Studio’s downtown Hub. Over the course of 11 months professional artists will engage learners from Grades 11 and 12 in the classroom and in the Studio in the creation production and presentation of print media. The project will culminate in the presentation of the work in the Gallery.

Partnerships with arts & non-arts groups

The Print Studio initiates collaborative projects with other sectors be it environmental groups, human and social services, sports and recreation, and use art to grow stronger as a community.

Project Description: Both artists and health care professionals are intricately connected to their work practice. Their sense of identity is wrapped up in their profession. It is sometimes difficult to separate the role of artist/doctor/nurse from the individual. This projects links professional artists as Community Arts Practitioners with medical staff from the Juravinski Cancer Centre (JCC) in a creative collaborative relationship. Hands on workshops exploring print media, photography and curatorial process will be provided.

The project will culminate in an exhibition of the work at the Juravinski Cancer Centre in June 2009.

Project Description: Over the course of 10 months, The Print Studio provided the participants with tools to develop their skill in the visual arts, which empowered them in their creative journey. Five professional artists who are experienced Community Arts Practitioners, worked with the Print Studio staff and project co-ordinator/curator, and engaged youth in a seamless process from idea to exhibition. Thematically, Textures in My Crib explored Identity vs. Modes of Perception.

The project culminated in the production of individual work, a group Zine and a curatorial workshop that oversaw an exhibition in the Member’s Gallery.

Funding for this project was provided by the Canada Council for the Arts and the Laidlaw Foundation.
