JOB: Studio Technician: Traditional Printmaking Studio (Hamilton, ON)

The Print Studio is looking for a fulltime (37 hrs per week) enthusiastic and energetic candidate who is trained in all forms of print media with a screen- printing focus. The Studio Technician’s role is to ensure the smooth and efficient running of The Print Studio’s traditional printmaking studio for members, community partners and clients, serving needs relating to accessing, making and the learning of art. The Studio Technician will also be supporting the community based art project Nu Deal, working with at-risk youth; therefore, Studio Technician would have to complete a police check.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

Financial


Responsible for ordering and stock control of all materials provided and sold to users of the studio. Keeping budgetary controls by ensuring that budget relating to purchasing of materials balances.
Planning and Administration

• Ensure that Health and Safety requirements are met in relation to all activities taking place within the studio,

• Ensure that printmaking facilities (first floor and basement) are well maintained and of a high standard; that the facilities are in clean condition and good working order,

• Order studio supplies, maintain inventories; prepare and ensure safe handling and code compliance of acids and other sensitive materials,

• Update studio members’ information packages, • Research and advise on the upgrading of equipment and materials

Instruction

• Be responsible for conducting weekly safety checks and completing the required Health and Safety check lists in all locations indicated within the printmaking area,

• To carry out introduction courses for each user (groups or individuals) of The Print Studio, ensuring that all are aware of current Health and Safety practice,

• To deliver ongoing supervision and assistance to studio members and participants of the Nu Deal project with a focus on screen-printing,

• Research and maintain awareness of new developments in print media technology, techniques and materials for application within the Studio and the benefit of users’ and members’ practice,

• Supervise trainee technicians on internships.

Training

• To undertake training as identified and agreed with the Executive Director to ensure the ongoing effective delivery of the organization’s objectives.

Relationship Management

• Being the interface with members and users of The Print Studio and ensuring that the Studio’s ambitions for access, learning and making are met,

• Respond to inquiries sent to studio@theprintstudio.ca, • Attend Studio Committee meetings 6 times a year,

• Dealing with the day-to-day needs of members and users of the studio, • Advocating the range of opportunities and services available at The Print Studio to potential new user groups.

Required Qualifications:

The Studio Technician will have successfully completed a post-secondary program in print media (lithography, serigraphy, etching, and photo-based techniques as related to these processes; and knowledge of non-toxic printmaking methods). The Technician will also have knowledge and experience of general maintenance and repair of tools and equipment; training and experience in print media processes with particular proficiency in screen-printing and experience in electronic imaging or an understanding of computer-assisted print techniques. First Aid and WHMIS certification are assets but can be taken on the job. WHMIS certification is required.

Special Skills:

This position requires professional experience in serigraphy and working with youth. Candidates must have a high level of organizational skill and must also be able to work independently, have excellent verbal and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work closely and effectively with youth on diverse tasks.
